THE END OF AN ERA: JOSEPH CERVANTES

For those who have spent any time at all watching or following the Fort Worth Vaqueros over the last decade, you’ll no doubt be aware of Joseph Cervantes. He has been with the club in some capacity the entire time, earning the nickname, “Mr. Vaquero.” He is near and dear to supporters’ hearts, especially the Panther City Hellfire.

Here at the end of his tenth season, he is hanging up his boots. His last game in a Vaqueros kit will be on Saturday, July 8 against Central TX Coyotes FC.

To celebrate his many contributions to the club, I was tasked with creating an 11x17” poster they could hand out after the match for him to sign for fans. Initially, I had the idea to make it look like a matted frame. I built layered mattes in Illustrator, but when I went to add his image, I just couldn’t get it looking the way I wanted it to look.

Like pretty much every creative, I decided to pivot. I’m a big fan of street art, so I decided to do a “mural” of him. I’m really stoked on the final product, which was created in Photoshop.

If you’re in the Fort Worth area on Saturday, head to W.O. Barnes Stadium to help give Joseph a proper sendoff.

Cheers,
Brian
